The original proposal for traffic lights at the intersection of Ralston St, Mowbray Rd West and Beaconsfield Rd came from Lane Cove Council. The reason touted for the necessity of the light was to provide relief for vehicles attempting to make a right-hand turn from Ralston St into Mowbray Rd West. Willoughby Council’s response, based on concern that drivers would continue across the intersection an ‘rat-run’ through Willoughby streets, was that they did not support the lights,

Over the next couple of years,  Lane Cove Council refused to discuss a range of safety proposals for Mowbray Rd West until Willoughby Council agreed to the lights.

Lane Cove Council finally got the ear of the RTA (now RMS) and more specific details of proposed lights were prepared.

At this stage Willoughby Council held a public meeting. An overwhelming number of attendees voted against installation of lights,

However, due to the desire to see safety initiatives implemented along Mowbray Rd, Willoughby Council reluctantly agree to consider a configuration that precluded movements between Ralston St and Beaconsfield Rd.

This is how the lights were implemented (against the wishes of the majority of Willoughby residents).

  1. The new traffic lights at Beaconsfield and Mowbray roads has increased the ‘rat racing’ along Dalrymple and Coolaroo. We believe that there should be a right hand turn from Beaconsfield into Mowbray plus entry allowed into Ralston. Also the existing time phasing of the lights is impeding reasonable flow along Mowbray.
Hoping something can be achieved to rectify the problem.

  2. Dear Editor,
I have taken a photograph from my car on my way to work on 28 Oct at 8.55 am which clearly shows the queue of cars trying to get to Centennial Ave lights from other parts of our suburb in order to turn west. I have sent it to the Council. I feel sorry for our fellow residents in Coolaroo Rd. Is there any way I can post this photo on this web site? This would not happen if all these cars could turn right from Beaconsfield Rd to Mowbray.

  3. My problem is turning right (coming down from the highway) into Beaconsfield Road from Mowbray Road. There is an arrow but I have never seen it green. Normally to turn right I have to do so on a red light as they cars going up Mowbray towards the highway run the amber light. The lights and how they are working really need to be looked at again.
