Library services

library On the subject of the library and the services it provides, some years back Willoughby Council pulled out of the Shorelink service; the reason given was that this would enable the Library to implement initiatives it could not do while within Shorelink. Could you outline what these were and which ones have been implemented?

Can Willoughby get a click and deliver/collect library service? In addition to the Northern Beaches, Ku-ring-gai now offers a similar service.

As a consequence of the Council withdrawal from Shorelink, I became a member of more libraries and some services/initiatives Willoughby could consider include:

  • North Sydney and Ku-ring-gai Libraries will hold (reserve) a book at no cost, provided it is on the shelf. And Ku-ring-gai will send the book to any of its 4 libraries for easy pick up.
  • Stanton Library has philosophy discussion groups and marks World Philosophy Day which is pertinent as libraries are about learning/thinking.
  • The State Library allows any member, not just students, to book its study rooms.

And finally, I have a question – why is it that Chatswood library does not open for a full day on Sunday?

  1. Response from library: Willoughby City Library is pleased to offer a Click & Collect service to Library members from June 1.

This will allow our keen readers to borrow books from Chatswood Library, while maintaining social distancing, and ensuring hygiene measures are in place.

Updates will be posted on the Library and Council website and Facebook pages.

Prior to 1 June, you may wish to access library’s eresources. There are ebooks, eaudiobooks and movies for you to enjoy with your library membership. Please see the full range of materials on the library website, or phone the library between 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday with any questions you may have.

    With regards your other points:

    · Reservation fees are set within Council’s Fees & Charges. Each year the community has the opportunity to comment on the Fees & Charges for the forthcoming year. The opportunity to comment on Fees & Charges for 2020 – 21 will be advertised in due course, and we welcome your feedback.
Willoughby City Library exited Shorelink in 2017. Since then Council has been able to direct resources to other services including a much expanded program of events and to refurbish Chatswood Library to meet community needs for study and work spaces.

    · Study rooms within Chatswood Library are able to be booked by any member of the community. While the rooms are unavailable at the moment, you may see details of all rooms that are available to book here

    · Thank you for your comments regarding opening hours at Chatswood Library. Council aims to ensure opening hours balance community needs and the cost associated with providing the service.

  2. Followup question:

Thank you for your response to my queries regarding the library and for advising that the library will be offering a click and collect service from 1 June,

The latter confused me a little as the NSW government is allowing libraries to re-open from 1 June.

Museums, galleries and libraries to reopen from 1 June 2020 | NSW Government
Premier Gladys Berejiklian today said this was another important step forward in the reopening of NSW. “We cautiously invite our cultural institutions and libraries across NSW to re-open from 1 June 2020, but with strict new protocols in place,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Why is the Library not re-opening on 1 June?
